The magnificent Lake Kerkini...

Around its waters spreads an entire world, which was created and will continue to exist as long as it exists. The magnificent Lake Kerkini. People, animals, plants live together, support each other, depend on each other, complement each other. This is how nature is.

Located 45 km west of Serres and next to the village of Lithotopos, the lake attracts a large number of tourists and travelers every year who visit to admire the unique landscapes, rare species of animals, plants and birds in one of the most important wetlands in Greece and Europe, which is protected by the Ramsar Convention, Greek Legislation and the E.O.K. Directive 79/409.

the history of the lake...

The Kerkini lake is artificial and was created at the point where the “Butkovo” marsh, what remained of the ancient Prasiada lake, extended. The works were started by the Monks-Ulen company in 1928-1936 and completed by the Greek state.

A major project that required the creation of embankments, the construction of a dam, the draining of the adjacent Lake Achinos, while irrigation canals and a network of ditches were opened to irrigate the fields and intercept torrents. The result was a unique breath of life for the place. In addition to an artificial reservoir of water, a magnificent wetland was created, which became a refuge for many animals and plants.

the ecosystem...

In the forest around the lake we encounter 276 recorded bird species, 68% of the species in our country.

Of these, 70, such as the silver pelican, the red-backed pelican, the gannet, the nightingale, the stilt, the copperhead, the black-tailed godwit and all herons, are considered rare or threatened with extinction and are protected by the European Union.

Despite the many changes that followed and resulted in the reduction of both the water level and the area of the lake, the beauty of the landscape, the quality of the ecosystem, and the fertility of the soil remain unchanged, providing protection for more than thirty species of fish, such as carp (crucian carp), eel, butterflyfish, wrasse, etc. Amphibians, reptiles, and mammals such as jackals, wolves, wildcats, hares, foxes, weasels, roe deer, badgers, etc., live in their natural environment.

Here we discover herds of the Greek water buffalo, which while in danger of extinction, thanks to the efforts of the locals, was not only saved but also gave new life to the livestock farming activity of the area.
