a free heart...

A… free heart, the Greek water buffalo migrated to Greece thanks to Xerxes, who transported it along with his army’s supplies across the Strymon. It is an animal that is not confined but grazes freely on the shores of the lake.

In the centuries that have passed, it has saved the local populations from starvation with its meat and milk. Since 1950, Dutch cows have stolen the show and the water buffalo has been neglected. Its population is decreasing, its meat is undervalued. It took the great food scandals with dioxins and mad cows to rediscover the safety and purity of the despised buffalo meat.

a special animal...

The Greek water buffalo, a species endangered and protected under the Ramsar Convention, is a special animal.

It lives in herds and is always free, which is why buffalo meat is guaranteed to be free-range. Dark eyes, dark color, it blends uniquely with the wonderful, otherworldly, lakeside landscapes, where it coexists with special species of birds and animals while it is called upon for the second time to support the local population with the exploitation of its meat.

the ecosystem...

In the forest around the lake we encounter 276 recorded bird species, 68% of the species in our country.

Of these, 70, such as the silver pelican, the red-backed pelican, the gannet, the nightingale, the stilt, the copperhead, the black-tailed godwit and all herons, are considered rare or threatened with extinction and are protected by the European Union.

Despite the many changes that followed and resulted in the reduction of both the water level and the area of the lake, the beauty of the landscape, the quality of the ecosystem, and the fertility of the soil remain unchanged, providing protection for more than thirty species of fish, such as carp (crucian carp), eel, butterflyfish, wrasse, etc. Amphibians, reptiles, and mammals such as jackals, wolves, wildcats, hares, foxes, weasels, roe deer, badgers, etc., live in their natural environment.

Here we discover herds of the Greek water buffalo, which while in danger of extinction, thanks to the efforts of the locals, was not only saved but also gave new life to the livestock farming activity of the area.
